The Power of Story

Note: Blogger is being difficult , not allowing me to modify the design.
I'm still "Roaming with Om" just not in India.

The Power of Story

Or, “how’s that impulse thing working for you?”  Quite well, thank you very much.  On impulse. with a little bit of Enneagram counseling whispering in my ear, I decided to meet with the Black Madonnas tonight.  They’re a lovely group of women whom I've met only once but I can tell that it will be rewarding to get to know them better.  And, for the most part, they choose interesting books to read.  I have a feeling that some of the books may contain too much emotional angst and navel gazing for this five on the Enneagram.

Speaking of which, fives need to get out more, spending too much time in solitude and in our heads.  Well, one out of two's not bad.  I’m still very much in my head with this month’s mesmerizing read, Sister by Rosamund  Lupton.  Lupton’s spot on character development is wrapped in gorgeous prose and highlight-worthy description.

“Her tears fall onto the white damask tablecloth, but she doesn’t mind the waiter’s stare, not caring anymore about ‘form’ and socially correct behavior.  She’s the mother in the rustling dressing gown sitting at the end of our beds smelling of face cream in the dark.  The glimpse I had as she first shed her old Mumness is now fully exposed.”

“Before you died, the adjectives about my life were second league:  stressful, upsetting, distressing; at the worst, deeply sad.  Now I have the big-gun words --- harrowing, traumatic, devastating --- as part of my thesaurus of self.”

No productive work for me today.  I’ll be on the porch reading, struggling to get in a perfunctory meditation and perhaps some exercise later in the afternoon.

What is up with Blogger!? The formatting is just bizarre and has a mind of its own.

I suppose I caught the "impulse" bug from you via cyberspace. Your text about the book prompted me to get it on ebook, and I "wasted" the rest of that entire day turning the electronic pages. What a FABULOUS read! You're right -- the writing is excellent and the story compelling. ... Hope you've gotten Blogger straightened out by now! :) Off now to try to get some productive work done, tackling the backlog that got even more "logged" from my glorious reading day!

Au contraire. Reading is never "wasted." It's fruits and veggies for the brain! (Even light reading, for all you snobs out there.) Besides, stories transport me beyond the minutiae of life. . . . . . . That's my story and I'm sticking to it.:)
