Because of legal issues, Sri Yukteswar's Puri ashram, despite being given to Paramahansa Yogananda and then by descent to SRF, is not SRF property. Sri Yukteswar had two prominent disciples, Paramahansa Yogananda and Swami Hariharananda. The ashram is in the hands of followers of Swami Hariharananda.
Nevertheless, Craig arranges a visit for his pilgrimage tour members. The current ashram leader is a bit grumpy but by being polite and depositing a 100 rupee note (about $2 but a generous amount here) in the donation box as we sign the visitor's book we were allowed to enter Sri Yukteswar's burial shrine.
Sidebar: Everywhere we go (the Sikh Temple, the library) we are asked to sign a large ledger, giving date, name, country, and comments. It's sweet to see how interested everyone is in visitors.
Our young ashram guide even left us alone. We all crowded into the small space. On the wall opposite is a raised marble area, where Sri Yukteswar is buried. We had a lovely short meditation, then Craig led us in a couple of devotional chants. Craig stepped outside the small room and kept watch while we snapped photos.
Afterwards, the young man led us to the tiny room where Master and Sri Yukteswar used to meditate. We went in two by two for a few minutes, absorbing the holy vibrations. We then left the ashram and spent some time in the lane outside taking pictures under the ashram sign.
All in all, a glorious visit. Seeing the ashram makes Master's words in the Autobiography of a Yogi come alive. Our India tour has barely begun and already I'm amazed at the experiences Craig has arranged for us.
