Diamond Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip on the Royal Barge

Given the world's uneven history of the good, the bad, and the ugly of national leaders Great Britain's lavish Diamond Jubilee celebrations honoring Queen Elisabeth's 60 years on the throne might give us pause.  Were it not for the almost universal acknowledgement that this woman, no matter what one may think about the monarchy, has spent her adult life in duty and service to something other than herself.

In a land like ours where we fawn over the flimsiest of celebrities it's bracing to see someone who has embraced the call to service and handled the complexities of her position with grace and dignity.

So, here's to the Queen and the British, who could teach Americans a thing or two about grace and grit.

Not even the rain could dampen the performance of the London Philharmonic Choral Singers.
